The Center for International Students decides whether an assessment test or German language test (DSH) is required or an applicant can be declared eligible for direct admission to higher education.

Foreign nationals with German university entrance qualifications and applicants from EU countries

Foreign nationals with German university entrance qualifications and applicants from EU countries (as well as from Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway) are admitted in the same way as German nationals. Applications for admission must be accompanied by university entrance qualification certificates and proof of adequate German language skills, such as the German Language University Entrance Exam for Foreign Students (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber und Studienbewerberinnen, DSH) or the German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache, DaF) test. All documents must be in German or translated into English. Only officially authorised copies are acceptable.

German nationals with German qualifications
The primary requirement for admission to Bachelor level studies at Furtwangen University is the general university entrance qualification (Abitur), subject-specific university entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife), entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife), or another secondary education qualification recognised as equivalent. Language Requirements

International Business (Internationale Betriebswirtschaft - IBW) programme

The area of specialisation you choose as part of the IBW programme determines the regional and economic focus it will have, and also determines which second foreign language you will need, i.e. in addition to English as the compulsory first foreign language. Admission requires English skills equivalent to approximately seven years of academic study or a TOEFL test score of at least 213. For EU applicants the level of English on the school certificates is adequate proof of English language proficiency. No additional proof is required.

  • Area of specialisation – China
    No prior Chinese language skills are required. The programme includes instruction in Mandarin Chinese.
  • Area of specialisation – The Francophone World
    This area of specialisation requires additional evidence of French skills based on approx. four to five years of French instruction or an equivalent level of proficiency.
  • Area of specialisation – The Hispanic World
    This area of specialisation requires additional evidence of Spanish skills based on approximately four to five years of Spanish instruction or an equivalent level of proficiency.

International Business Management (IBM) programme

Applicants seeking admission to the IBM programme must demonstrate good English language skills.
Applicants must provide the following tests or certificates as evidence:

  • German certificate of university entrance qualification with English grade 2.0 or 10/11/12 points minimum
  • TOEFL test score: minimum 550 points paper-based / 213 points computer-based / 79 points internet-based
  • English grade from a secondary school in the EU
    (equivalent German grade)
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 or better
  • GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) English: grade B or higher
  • International GCSE in English as a Second Language: grade B or higher
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency: grade B or higher
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate: grade A
  • Exempt: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, USA

German-language skills are not required.

Practical Experience

Service Management / Sales & Marketing / Molecular and Technical Medicine / Product Engineering

Applicants seeking admission to the following degree programmes are additionally required to provide evidence of having completed practical vocational training for a period of eight weeks (40 days minimum). :

Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics

Applicants seeking admission to the Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics (MM) degree programme are recommended to complete a preliminary practical work placement of 12 weeks' duration.

The training activity should reflect the curriculum of the first practical programme semester. Successfully completed vocational training for a practical trade within the relevant occupational field or an equivalent occupation is recognised according to requirements set out by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts.
