Students who are studying on a degree programme taught in English are not required to be able to speak German. However we do advise you to learn some basic German before you arrive to make your everyday life easier and help you make friends faster.
Nobody is saying German is easy to learn, but we do our best to help you. And don't forget, being able to speak another foreign language also looks great on a résumé! A two-week pre-sessional German crash course is offered through the International Center as part of the orientation programme for international students. This will give you some basic survival German and you willl pick up the language quite quickly when you are living here and talking to other students. You can then sign up for one of the free German courses offered by the university's Language Center which run during the semester. These are offered at various levels. The Language Center is also a German as a Foreign Language (DaF) testing center and a separate 2-day exam preparation course is offered for the DaF exams.
