Financial Support for Study or Internship Semester Abroad

There are only of few organisations offering scholarships or similar for non-EU-citizens (EU-citizens may find additional options on the German pages of this website). 

A scholarship applications requires throrough preparation and normally the following documents (depending on the organisation awarding the scholarship):

  • A well-founded and specific description of the motivation for the stay abroad
  • CV
  • Evidence of at least two semesters of successful studies
  • Reference from a professor
  • Proof of relevant language skills


Get your information from the International Center or the awarding organisation early on.The application periods are often very lengthy!

ERASMUS-Programme



The Erasmus-Programm is a programme of activities instigated by the European Union with the aim of promoting the mobility of students and teachers throughout Europe.

As part of the Erasmus-Programms students can generally obtain funding fort wo types of stays abroad: 

  • Studying at e European partner university 
  • Internship within a European company

 The rule is that a student may generally obtain funding for each of these options once. Eligible students may therefore be funded once for Erasmus-studies of the maximum duration of twelvemonths and once for an Erasmus-internship of the same duration. For each student the maximum Erasmus-support period is thus limited to 24 months.

HFU students undertaking an internship with a European company may apply for a scholarship through the Koordinierungsstelle (coordinating office) Karlsruhe.

Students taking their study semester abroad at one of the Hochschule Furtwangen’s  European Erasmus partner university, will normally automatically be awarded a partial Erasmus scholarship.


To which universities does the Erasmus-scholarship apply?

For all of the HFU's European partner universities with which a ERASMUS-treaty was signed.
Exceptions: Napier University, NEWI,some oft he Business School’s French partner universities, Russia, Ukraine 


Who can apply?

those as defined by law as (find the text of the law here):Bildungsinländer im Sinne des § 8 Abs. I Ziffer 2ff & Abs. II BAföG; refugees recognised in the EU; stateless persons; persons entitled to asylum or those recognised as permanent EU residents

Example: winter semester 10/11: approximately €150.- per month

Baden-Württemberg Scholarship for Students

 

The Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM (Baden-Württemberg Scholarship) seeks to advance international exchange and serves the Baden-Württemberg-Stiftung’s (Bade-Württemberg trust) aim to promote a vibrant Baden-Württemberg with a high quality of life. The scholarship is aimed at highly qualified students at universities within Baden-Württemberg as well as those of their partner universities abroad. 

Furtwangen University receives an annual scholarship budget from the Baden-Württemberg-Stiftung for each academic year. The university can then decide independently to award these funds equally to Outgoings and Incomings in accordance with the Baden-Württemberg-Stiftung’s regulations. 

Scholarships for Incomings are awarded at a partner university’s nomination only. 

Scholarships for Outgoings are made available throughout the university. Each faculty normally receives a certain number of scholarships. Individual faculties can decide to award the scholarships available to them exclusively to Incomings. Similarly, the scholarships may be primarily made available for study spaces at selected universities, to support the faculties internationalisation strategy. Therefore it is advisable to consult with your faculty’s international relations officer prior to application. 

Who can apply? 

Any student enrolled at Furtwangen University (regardless of nationality) who is planing a study semester at one of the HFU's partner universities abroad (NOT part of the ERASMUS-programme).

HFU Business School students cannot apply as the HFU Business School awards the scholarships which are available to incoming students from their partner universities., thus ensuring tuition free places at these partner universities for outgoing Business Students in turn.

 

What can be funded? 

A study semester at a partner university abroad.

The funding period is normally four to five months. 

The monthly sponsorship is usually betweem 400 und 600 €, depending on the total budged awarded to the university.

How to apply? 

The Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM application form is available through FELIX. It has to be submitted within the deadline to the International Center. The application has to include all documents listed (CV, letter of motivation, grade sheet, document showing language skills and photo). 

Application deadline is the 31. March for the following academic year (both summer and winter semester). 

Selection  Process and Selection Criteria:

An internal HFU selection committee views all applications received. This selection committee consists of the vice president for international affairs, the head of the International Center as well as the faculties’ international relations officers.

Factors for awarding the scholarships are a) academic qualification and b) individual suitablity of an applicant. To assess this, the academic grades and the description of the planned study abroad will be foremostly considered.

Specifically, the following selection criteria will form the basis of the decision:

1. study and examination results so far, including specilist knowledge

2. level of language skills relevant for the proposed 

3. status of preparation for stay abroad; how this stay is integrated into the progression of studies in general, how it relates to future vcareer prospects

4. general personality traits and extracurricular activities relevant for a stay abroad

Following the assessment of applications, a ranking based on a point system is compiled, resulting in a ranked list in accordance with the available scholarships.

Due to the multitude of elements of theselection process as well as to ensure the absolute confidentiality of decisions made by the selection committee, individual applicants cannot receive a reason fort he decision made. We ask for your understanding here.
