Internet- and/or intranet-based IT applications play an increasingly important role in private and commercial matters. This research priority area focuses on such infrastructures and applications:

1. Web-based infrastructures and applications: adaptive systems
Today's grid and cloud architectures consist of loosely coupled systems and resources from multiple organisations that are merged together to create a virtual super-system. This merger allows the realisation of very flexible business processes which can be adapted to specific conditions.
One of our main tasks within this research project is the dynamic generation of secure services as well as the adaptation of already existing non-secure services.

2. Web-based infrastructures and applications: e-learning

In discussions on the further development and modernisation of the German education system, an increasingly relevant issue at the national and international level is the importance of electronic forms of learning (e-learning).
The introduction of e-learning (to complement class instruction – that is, blended learning – or within a distance learning scenario) requires coordinated planning, monitoring, and integration into existing structures, as shown by many studies and examples from universities as well as in vocational training and further education.
The core topic of this research area – along with the examination of (rapid) authoring tools and their suitability for use by lecturers to automatically create learning content – is a range of questions whose answers will contribute to the increasing level of acceptance and success of e-learning measures within the didactic environments both of specific universities and of continuing academic education as a whole.
