In our region in the south of Germany there is a high concentration of companies  involved in the production of high quality machines, plants and systems for medicine, and machine tools, as well as in various areas of engineering such as mechanical engineering, precision engineering and engineering for the automobile industry. For these products, the optimal production of fine surfaces and small tolerances by means of machining and superfinish machining is one of their key competitive factors.

The Institute for Precision Machining (KSF in German) carries out research in the area of geometrically defined and undefined machining.

For more than 15 years, the KSF has been working on the continually growing problems of the processing of new materials and the growing demands of machining, particularly in the area of grinding processes, but also in the area of unconvential chip control processes (e.g. oscillation and laser assisted). Besides research, teaching is also an important part of our work. We also offer doctoral opportunities.

We provide our industry partners, both domestic and international, with concrete, innovative solutions to specific workplace problems. In the Grinding Work Group founded in 1997, we work together with 20 well-known firms, and in the Carbides and Ceramics Work Group founded in 2015, more than 10 firms. Both work groups were founded with the goal of optimizing and developing specific machining processes.

Most companies do not have the means to carry out their own research. KSF supports firms with its expertise and knowledge of new trends and technology transfer, as well as carrying out research across the field of precision machining.

Every two years KSF runs the "Modern Precision Grinding" seminar in Stuttgart, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Additionally, every alternate two years we also host, together with TechnologyMountains, the Chip Control Innovation Forum. KSF also runs training seminars for industry on a continual basis. The 4-day seminar "Basics of Precision Grinding" offers industry members a theoretical and practical insight into the field of grinding.

Our students and doctoral candidates are closely involved in the ongoing research work and profit from the machines, plant and measuring equipment available at KSF while working on their Bachelor and course project work. Students also have the opportunity to work as student assistants at KSF or to do a practical internship with us.
