General information on placement tests and registration for language courses

All students taking English and German (DaF) courses at the Language Center for the first time, must take a placement test before they can take the course. Both placement tests and registration for all language courses at the Language Center can only be carried out online via the NEO platform during a limited time period at the beginning of each semester. An access code is necessary to register for both placement tests and language courses. Detailed information about how to register for NEO and sign up for placement tests and language courses is given below.

Please note: after registering for your course, you must also register the course in the Examinations Office (Prüfungsamt) in order for it to be added to your transcript of records.

Details of online registration dates and times with relevant access codes for each semester will be posted below ahead of time.

What is NEO?

The HFU Language Center (LC) uses a Learning Management System called NEO, which enables the LC to administer all courses centrally. Our instructors also use NEO to provide students with online materials and to post important messages and information. Our students use NEO to register for language courses online and to access blended learning materials. NEO can be used on any internet-ready device, such as PCs, laptops, tablet computers or smartphones.

Taking the English Placement Test

All first semester students and students taking a Language Center course for the first time, must take an online English Placement Test first.

Exception: students of HFU Business School (IBW, IBM and IEB) do not have to take a placement test for the language courses (English and regional focus language) required as part of their degree.

Students who have already taken an English course at the Language Center do not have to take the Placement Test again. Students who want to take more than one course, only have to take the test once. For more information on what to do in the case, please read the section on Registering for a language course.

The English Placement Test is only available online and will be activated for a limited period of time at the beginning of the semester.

Taking the German (DaF) Placement Test

All international students at HFU taking a German course at HFU for the first time, whether an intensive course or a semester course, must take a DaF (German as a foreign language) Placement Test before registering for a course. This applies to both international guest students who are attending the university for 1 or 2 semesters, and master's students who are studying full-time for 2 years. If you are taking a DaF Intensive course, you are automatically registered in NEO by the Language Center and will receive an email from the Language Center informing you that you should take an online placement test. With the results you will be registered for the appropriate DaF intensive German course.

Please note: If you have an international German language qualification (Goethe Institute, Telc, TestDaF), you are not required to take the Placement Test. Please present the certificate at the Language Center as soon as possible in order to be placed in the next course level.

The German Placement Test is only available online and for a limited time period.

If you do not do this, your language course will not be listed on your official transcript of records.

The registration period is normally for one week starting in the 3rd week of lectures. Check here for exact dates and deadlines.

The registration period for Summer Semester 2017 is from Monday 3 April to Monday 10 April, 2017.

Classroom Participation and Course Assessment

Important information regarding class participation and course assessment:
The course assessment has 2 components, Classroom Participation and a Written Exam, both of which have to be passed with a minimum grade of 50% (grade: 4.0) in order to pass the course.

Classroom Participation
Regular attendance in the Language Center language courses is a course requirement. If participants miss more than 3 classes per semester (including absence due to illness), they will be awarded a "fail" grade for "Classroom Participation".

Classroom Participation includes additional classwork in NEO. If you have not achieved a grade of 50% for this work, you will not be allowed to take the written exam.
