Childcare in Furtwangen

Kindergarten Maria Goretti

A cooperation agreement between the Catholic children's Maria Goretti daycare centre, the town of Furtwangen, and HFU has existed since 2003. In 2006, the Freiburg Office of Student Services (Studentenwerk Freiburg) also joined. The service is available for children ages three months to school age.

The Maria Goretti children's day care centre and the St Martin kindergarten have merged. Both are run by the Catholic parish of St Cyriak, subsidised by the regional government and the town of Furtwangen. Maria Goretti is located directly in the town centre approximately 50m from the university, while St Martin is situated in the Kussenhof area (Berliner Straße). HFU students, staff and professors are entitled to use the two facilities. The Maria Goretti day care centre has four groups, while the St Martin kindergarten has one. In total, the two facilities look after approximately 120 children between the ages of 8 weeks and 12 years of age.

Holiday programme in Furtwangen

Kinderuni (Children's Uni) – This scheme, run in cooperation with various regional partners, provides a varied programme combining education, technology, fun, sports and adventure and includes the possibility of overnight stays. You will find a detailed programme description and an online registration form on the Kinderuni (content in German only) website. Funding is available for financially disadvantaged families.

During the summer from July to September the German Clock Museum runs an open clock workshop (suitable for children ages six and older) every Tuesday from 2.00 pm to 4.30 pm. Here, children can saw, paint, and build. As an introduction, there is a tour of the exhibition. Then each child builds his or her own lacquered wall clock with a quartz movement or, alternatively, a sundial with a compass. Finally, everyone gets together to listen to a concert of the museum's mechanical musical instruments.

Activities for children are also held during the Easter, Whitsun, and Christmas holidays. Depending on the season and on any special exhibitions in the museum, children will make either cuckoo clocks or paper stars. Full information is available on the museum website.
