The Industrial Med Tec programme on the Tuttlingen campus focuses on the development and design of medical appliances, surgical instruments, and implants. And that's no surprise, since Tuttlingen is home to over 400 medical technology companies.

Advanced medical care is not possible today without highly developed medical products and instruments and as a result, medical engineering is currently one of the fastest-growing industries. Industrial MedTec engineers plan, supervise, and lead the development and manufacturing of instruments and complex medical appliances as well as the necessary manufacturing processes.

Programme content

The Industrial Med Tec programme is based on a wide variety of mechanical engineering fundamentals. The more in-depth focus in later semesters is derived directly from the core priorities and key areas of Tuttlingen's medical engineering companies. The most important aspects of the course are therefore medical appliance engineering, surgical instruments, implants, and minimally invasive procedures.

Studying medical engineering in Tuttlingen means you’ll study with 100 companies! Starting as early as the first semester, you are able to take advantage of the following practical opportunities as a result of the university’s strong links with industry:

  • Placements in company laboratories
  • Lecture series with experts from the industry
  • Introduction to the specialist field of medical engineering with six to eight cooperating companies
  • Mentoring by skilled experts and management staff from companies in the industry
  • Placements focusing on the fundamentals of materials engineering, electrical engineering, physics, automation technology, computer science, metrology, and sensor technology
  • Industrial placements focusing on medical appliance engineering and minimally invasive procedures

The medical engineering sector is booming, but there is already a lack of specialists with engineering experience. The Industrial Med Tec programme trains these specialists. The programme is highly practical, provides up-to-date course content and allows direct contact with more than 100 leading companies, including many from the medical engineering sector.

The Tuttlingen campus has strong connections to business and industry, and company tours and industrial placements give students the chance to get their foot in the door early on and secure a highly sought-after job in industry. The chances of being hired by one of the participating companies after graduation are also very high.
